Core tools

photo

This image shows a large grey quartzite core tool (unifacial) with 50% pebble cortex. Cortex means the original surface of the rock before it was knapped/or struck Here you can see both sides of the tool and its scale. The black and white squares represent 1cm each, so this tool is approximately 14cm wide. Core tools are a type of stone tool that are created from a large piece of stone where a few flakes have been struck off the surface with a hammerstone. Multiple flakes have been removed (flaked surface). This kind of stone tool may have been used to crush and pound seeds to make flour and to cut and skin food resources such as wallaby. Women and men used stone tools.
