Provide your feedback on Aboriginal Cultural Ways

Take the survey now

Provide your feedback on Aboriginal Cultural Ways

Ballina Shire Council is seeking feedback from locals and visitors on their usage of the coastal paths and Aboriginal Cultural Ways signage that is installed along sections of this path.

In 2017 Ballina Shire Council installed a series of 22 interpretive signs that recognise the Aboriginal cultural heritage values along the Ballina coastline.

The signage is installed between Angels Beach to Sharpes Beach in East Ballina, along the Coastal Recreation Path that traverses the Declared East Ballina Aboriginal Place.

The project was a collaboration between Ballina Shire Council and Ballina Shire’s Aboriginal community, and is referred to as Aboriginal Cultural Ways.

Stage two of Aboriginal Cultural Ways is in progress and due for completion in the coming months. Stage two will extend interpretive elements along the Coastal Walk from Sharpes Beach north to the lookout at Lennox Head.

This extension provides information about the significance of Aboriginal cultural heritage relevant to this section of the coast.

Ballina Shire Council is very keen to hear about your interest in, or experience of, Ballina’s coastal paths and walks. We want to hear from everyone including visitors and locals who haven’t yet walked or cycled these paths,” says Council’s Team Leader Visitor Services, Alicia Wallace

It’s simple to participate and by completing the survey, participants will go in the draw to win a $250 experience gift voucher.

The survey closes at 5pm AEST on Sunday 24 April 2022.

  • BIRD WATCHING IN AND AROUND BALLINA

The Ballina region has so much to offer - surf, sand and rock pools overlooked by broad jagged rock faces, the imposing Richmond River and its beautiful estuaries, the steep hillsides covered with subtropical rainforest and adjacent wide areas of coastal heath. These are matched by the diveristy and beauty of the birdlife.

In 2016, Ballina Shire Council identified the need for a reinvigoration of its public spaces.

After ten years of displaying the same community-based flags and banners throughout the region, the time was ripe for a fresh new representation of both Ballina Shire’s heritage, and vision for the future.

Celebrated, multi-skilled local artist Rachel Stone developed six beautiful, unique images, in consultation with local communities to display throughout the region, specifically in the locations of Ballina, Wardell, Lennox Head, and Alstonville.

Rachel worked with local schools and community groups to produce a range of designs that reflect the fond memories locals have of their towns, and the images they most associate with the area, with a strong focus on the natural environment.

The result is a vibrant, diverse series of imagery displayed throughout the Ballina Shire, in both banner and flag form.

These flags and banners represent the towns they are located in, and offer a beautification of public spaces, as well as a colourful welcome to visitors to the area.

During your visit through our beautiful region, keep an eye out for these lovely pieces of art, and learn what they represent for the Ballina Shire and its people.

The quotes you read accompanying each image are from the artist Rachel Stone.
